What strings are folks using on their Reiters?

From Ragtimejoe on 4/4/2013 8:01:58 AM

I'm sure this is a rehash of an old topic. My Reiter has great bottom end and mid-range but the 1st string is a bit to hot for my taste. Their is an empty Elxir package in the pocket, but I don't know if that's what's on the banjo. I don't even know what guage strings are on it. The bridge is 5/8 and the action is almost too low.

I prefer to stay with steel strings.

Recommendations?

Thanks

Joe

I use D'Addario J61 medium strings whcih is one type recommended by Bart when I wrote a couple of years back. I also place a small block of foam wrapped in soft cloth beteen the dowell stick and head. And I use John Balch calf or goat skin heads on all my Reiters. I see you live in Nashville: I live in Mt Juliet if you'd like to come get a set of strings free.

I also prefer those J-61's. I like mediums. I have an 11/16ths bridge on my Tubaphone. 5/8ths would be too low for me as well. My action is a tad over 5/32nds at the 12th fret...

Same here with the J-61s, although I can't claim to have sampled a great many others. On the few occasions I have done so, I go back to the D'Addarios at the next string change. Also using a 5/8 bridge and I'd say the action is high-ish, but can't give an exact measurement. Experimenting with different heights and types of bridges is relatively cheap and easy -- fun, even.

Sounds like I'll try the J61s.

Thanks

I use OME mediums or GHS PF-150's. Both the same gauge, Ome's have the chenille wrap at the loop end, but for tone , I really like the GHS's as they have a bronze wound 4th string. They last a long time too. elderly.com/accessories/names/...PF150.htm

I've gone to using Earthwood "frailing strings" , because they're a little heavier than typical mediums.

It's amazing the difference a thousandth of an inch can make! You really can feel the difference...

AMB's Mary Cox Signature strings with the bronze wound 4th: americanmadebanjo.com/product_...cts_id=68

And ditto what Banjolution said.
