Bacophone Plus

From Oldpiper on 12/6/2012 11:39:55 AM

Just got my Bacophone Plus from Spruce Tree Music. So far, it sounds great! A little more tone ring than I'm used to, but it rings clear and with volume. Very nice.

Will you put up a sound sample if you get a chance?

You really don't want to hear a sound sample from me. But, thanks anyway.

Fred - I hope you like that new banjo. That combination of tone rings does have the punch and brightness of a whyte laydie - with added sustain. It is somewhere between a whyte laydie & tubaphone sound.

I'm biased - but I think they sound best with a sturdy (medium-thick) hide head. I also like to set the tailpiece high to open-up the sound, add some nice overtones, and control the sustain a bit (I use Presto tailpieces too). Sometimes I stuff a small block of upholstery foam between the dowel stick and head - to take just a little but if the edge off.

Enjoy....

John: How would you describe that last head you sent as to thickness? Haven't received it yet and probably couldn't tell the comparative thickness anyway.

Fred: It is medium-thin - about .012-013. in.
