Do you have spikes on your Reiters? I can't get my head around installing them, but I don't like the tight 5th string.

Yes! All my banjos have spikes, except one, and I really miss having it on that one. I had a luthier install them.

Spikes are good. I usually install my own, but it would be easy to goof up if you don't have experience. My BR Regent was orded with spikes installed. I use a heavier than usual 5th string and don't like tuning it higher than A.

One thing to consider, Bart sets his 5th string pip sufficiently high so that it is even with the others at that point on the neck. This is a little higher than a typical bluegrass banjo. A high pip might cause you to stretch the string sharp when using the spikes.
If you are going to install spikes, it might be helpful to file the pip a little lower too. That will help to reduce the amout of re-tuning required.
Most of my Reiter banjos are not spiked. But, I tune the 5th string low most of the time ("E" or "F" when in "double C"). So I have no problem tuning it higher when I capo.

I'm a bit different in that I typically put in one spike at the 8th fret, (something Wyatt Fawley does on occasion). That way I can spike and tune up a half or whole step for 4th or 5th fret capo, or down a half step for the 2nd. I have a good ear so re-tuning is not an issue.

On the Tradesman that I owned the fifth string pip was high and I filed it down a bit, as John suggested, with I installed spikes. I've installed spikes on all my banjos and they turned out fine.....but it's weird, I waited a pretty long time to get the "banjo of my dreams," the Round Peak and I'm nervous about messing it up....I might take it to Greg Boyd, here in town and ask him to do it for me.....

No. Spikes lower the action on the 5th string, so I don't use them for clawhammer. All I ever do is tune up to A, anyway.

No spikes on my Reiter, either, for some of the reasons mentioned above, namely the higher than normal pip and keeping the action high on the 5th string since I have a tendency to bang my thumb on the head as it is. On another banjo that has a spike it seems some retuning of the 5th is needed, so it might as well be spikeless and just tune to A, which is as high as I ever go. Might be a different story if I were going higher.

Another option is the Regan capo. A neat little device that you use, and then remove. My friend has one and stores it on a string behind his bridge when not using.

+1 o the Reagan 5th string capo. I use it on both my Round Peak and A scale Reiters. Some people also like the Earl's Suspender Capo, but I've not tried it.
