Just purchased a "Standard" from a BHO member from Missoula Mt. A 2002 model. Could not be happier. I have an Eastman White Lady that I really like, but the Reiter has her beat. The tone is superb and the neck is way faster than the Eastman. Obvious difference in finish. That said, the two actually complement one another pretty well. Now onto a nylon string to round out the group.

Does anyone know how much replacing the no knot tailpiece with a Kershner tailpiece will change the tone? Thanks

	jbalch says: 11/12/2012 9:47:01 AM Congratulations. It is nice having different banjos that complement each other like that. I replaced the no-knots on my Reiter banjos with Prucha Presto tailpieces. I like the sound of a Presto ...and it gives me some small ability to vary the pressure on the bridge. I have not tried a Kershner on my Reiters ... but have used them on other open back banjos (Vega). Personally I did not like them. I felt like the Kershner was too heavy and resulted in a loss of responsiveness and openness in the tone. The sound was just too "thin" for me ...especially with a mylar head. But ... I know that some folks really like Kershner tailpieces so maybe you will get some other perspectives and encouragement.

I think it would be a little ringier than I like with a no-knot; I had a Gold Tone WL-250 with a frosted head and a no-knot, and I never got it quite where I wanted it.

	pastorharry says: 11/12/2012 3:16:25 PM I really recommend the Fielding tailpiece for ANY openback banjo, a bit more downward pressure than a no-knot, but not as big as other pieces. They are very well made, super easy to restring, and look great too!

	russtul says: 11/13/2012 9:54:21 AM Lots of good advice to consider, thanks guys. Not familiar with the Fielding but will definitely check it out. In response to above, after playing the Reiter a few days I'm seeing that the difference between it and the EBJ is not so much better as just different. Will keep them both I think. The Reiter has a faster neck though.
