Online Buying Advice

From Speed on 8/26/2012 9:22:25 AM

As some of you warned, BAS is harder to shake than I imagined.  I have a Reiter Special and I'm looking for a fretless.  Those of you who have purchased banjos online, from Ebay or BanjoBuyer or whatever, do you have any pithy advice about buying online?   I'm hoping there are some simple dos or don'ts or rules of thumb.  Thank you!

Ive bought and sold lots of banjos online and from the banjo hangout classifieds. I've been careful ... and fortunately have had no problems whatsoever.

One thing I do when buying is communicate with the seller. I ask questions and begin a dialogue. I think that helps to increase your confidence in the seller ... or highlight any concerns (if there are any). Sometimes you can even arrange a phone call with the seller.

Ebay has some protections built in. They are not foolproof. But they do peovide some assurance that the seller is trustworthy.

One very important thing is to study the photos very thoroughly. Look at every detail. Consider what is revealed...and sometimes more important - what is not. Ask for more photos if important things omitted. Don't guess about the details. Use the photos to verify as much as possible about the condition and nature of the instrument.

Enjoy!

My rule of thumb is if you know who the seller is, you'll be okay. For example, Bart Reiter sells banjos on eBay. Otherwise, if it is expensive, go the safe route, through a dealer. If it's money you can afford to put at risk, go ahead and take a chance, taking the best precautions you can. I got my Vega tubaphone really cheap from an auction!
