Desiring a Round Peak, Have Left Them Go Before

From OldTimeHermit on 6/29/2012 11:37:09 AM

I don't know why I'm bringing this issue to all of you enablers!  However, I am.  I have some nice instruments but cannot shake my desire for a Reiter.  I love the feel of the neck and the quality on the ones I've seen, and the fact that I'd be buying from a local small shop, though I keep deciding to pull the trigger too slowly on the Galaxes and Round Peaks that I see on the net.   Heck, I might as well... if I didn't love it I know it would sell to someone else who will.

Here is the rub - the darn things sell out so quickly that I can't go to Elderly etc. and sit down with a Galax, a Round Peak, a Bacon Plus etc.  They get them in and they go out again...  I can order and return (less shipping) but I'd rather get it right the first time.

I'm looking for a great old time/clawhammer instrument (after a flirtation with bluegrass I discovered true love in OT world) with a scoop, an adjustable neck and plain (classy, clean) looks and lean towards the 12" heads for depth and tone.

John Balch and others - any advice on these beasts?

Thanks!

True, that might also satisfy my urge to be a luthier (I love handcrafting and assembling things in general, and wood, so luthier work is appealing). Good point.

I did play a friend's Regent at a recent camp. Beautifully made with a great sound - I just want a scoop in whatever I buy.

I think a "Round Peak" will have quite a different sound from a "Galax," or the "Regent" that you tried. Therefore, I hope you can figure out a way to try before you buy. By the way, My "Round Peak" is probably my favorite banjo! I switched the No-Knot to a Fielding tailpiece, to control overtones a little ... sounds beautiful.

As of today Elderly is showing a Round Peak in stock, I say go for it!

My friend's Regent was very nice, not as "bright" as I expected the WL to be. I'm more of a "deeper thump" person myself.

PastorHarry - I called them today and it had sold minutes earlier! The website doesn't update "that" fast. ARGH! But thank you kindly....

This is inevitable ;-) You might as well get Mr. Balch to prep a 12" coffee stained & mottled skin head for your future Round Peak! That would be SWEET.

I purchased my Galax from Buck's County Folk Music Shop in Pennysylvania and I am very happy with it. I just checked their website and they currently have a Round Peak with hardshell case for $1390, a very good price. Good luck.

Marla:

I know a fellow who has a very nice Rould Peak and might be interested in selling. I'll contact him to find out. If he is interested, I'll put you in touch.

Did you see this new posting about A Reiter Whyte Laydie for sale?

I can scoop a new Reiter banjo free if it is done before it leaves my shop. I can scoop an existing Reiter banjo for $50 labor plus return UPS. I am sorry but I have no banjos here. I pack them up and get them on the UPS truck right after assembly, that's why I need my dealers. Production has increased 25% from last year with my new apprentice in the shop. I hope to get caught up on orders someday. The Round Peak will be slightly improved with a walnut rim cap from now on. I had been using a black rim bottom with no cap on this model.

Thanks, Bart! That walnut rim cap sounds great. Sounds like we'll start seeing those towards Fall/2013?

Well, I've been able to try both a Galax and a Round Peak and...to my surprise preferred the Galax. Comfy pot size, good brightness and volume (I have a light touch in playing and appreciate that the Galax seems to be helping me produce sound without heavy force). The 12" rim is hitting not-tall me in some uncomfortable ways, so now I know!
