Divine Intervention?

From Speed on 5/29/2012 9:52:53 PM

Hello everyone.  I started playing this past January and caught the clawhammer bug right away.  Started researching and looking for a decent open back.  I was thinking about driving to Lansing this summer to try different banjos, but the Reiters caught my eye most of all.  But there was also an Old Tyme Wonder nearby at a music store in Minneapolis.  It was in there for several months and had a layer of dust on it--I went to play it every few weeks.  I finally decided with the cost of gas, and the lack of actual banjos in stores (how does an "on order" banjo sound anyway?), I'd get the Old Tyme Wonder, which I liked.  I went in to get it and it had sold to someone else just minutes before.  This was a message from God, right?  Or perhaps from Bart?  Because I went home, tried Criagslist for the first time, and lo and behold there was a BR Special (#515) for sale about a mile away.  Within an hour I bought it (stole it) from the guy.  It had a white, shiny head on it, a little too bright for my taste.  I just put a fiberskyn on it.  It was sweet before.  Now it's even sweeter.  It has a tailpiece which I've never seen, like little curved fingers, like the hooks that keep the banjo head in place.  Does anyone know what I'm talking about?  Anyway, glad to have my first of what I hope will be several Reiter banjos.

Obviously, this was meant to be! You have a banjo for life now. Your description of the tailpiece sounds like a "talon" style, which I personally love the look of (although, I bet the special originally had a Waverly).

I was a one Reiter banjo man ~ for a while ~ too.

Now I and blessed with a nice collection of them. Each has found me at the right time. All of them serve specific purposes and are very useful. All are often-played.

BTW: #515 is from early 1990. I really like Bart's banjos from that period. It is a keeper I'm sure. Best wishes and congratulations on your banjo.

Yes, it is a talon tailpiece. Thanks. Very elegant. I forgot to mention, this banjo has a star on the fifth fret and a plain rosewood laminate on the peg head. BAS. Banjo acquisition syndrome? I may be safe because I'm still in the throes of full blown CAS (Child Acquisition Syndrome, 4).

I'm based in London in the United Kingdom and as of this last Saturday, I am the proud owner of this beautiful banjo. And talk about "message from God" - it turned up for sale in the little seaside town where I grew up (well outside London).

I should make clear - when I say "this beautiful banjo" I mean serial number 515 with the elegant talon tail piece, the plain rosewood laminate on the peg head and the star n the fifth fret. This is a banjo with wanderlust!
