Hello all,

I'm interested in putting a skin head on my Reiter standard - do I need an 11" or a 10 15/16?

Also, anybody have any thoughts on the Bill Miller's "regular" heads vs. the vellum ones?

	jbalch says: 5/12/2012 9:48:15 AM 11" size. From banjoseen.com, I prefer the vellum processed hides myself. They are usually a little stiffer and maybe stronger. They also have a nice throaty sound. Lately, I've installed unbleached (aka: Natural) goat hide heads on my Reiter banjos. I LOVE the looka dn sound oif the natural goat skin. I got the hides from Jeff Menzies and mounted them myself. I just linked a photo of one on my Grand Concert.
	ponty says: 5/16/2012 6:02:32 PM Hi Mike, I have just received and fitted a skin head on my Reiter standard. I got it from from Stern Tanning. It was expensive! After international shipping and duty phew! Previous to this, I had a Bill Miller vellum processed skin on the recommendation of John. Unfortunately, it split after about 6 months. The Stern Tanning head is very high quality, smooth, uniform thickness, white colour. I fitted it the 'British' way, so the when the excess is cut off, it is inside the pot and not outside. For my first non pre-fitted skin it went well. The sound however is quite different from the Miller skin, and probably the BMiller skin sounded better. By this, I mean it was brighter and less plunky. I like plunky, but this is real plunky. Probably made worse by a heavy bridge and strings. I will change these soon. You will need at least 2'' diameter greater that the pot.IE 11'' pot 14'' skin. I got a 16'' skin and that wasn't a waste.
