Has anyone heard Bart play banjo?

From Ho C Ying on 7/31/2011 6:57:18 PM

I was wondering Bart plays banjo on what level.

I think John B. and he are friendly, and I I,agile they've played together.

I've spoken to Bart several times over the years, but unfortunately only met him fact-to-face once. That was way back at the Tennessee Banjo Institute. I don't remember his playing anything when I saw him.

Among the things that really attracted me personally to Bart's banjos are the solid reliable construction and superior (IMHO) playability. They sound great, respond extremely well to different set-up choices and the necks feel good in my hands.

I don't know if Bart plays much (or at all). But the important thing to me is that he obviously can build instruments that do exactly what they are supposed to....and that are pleasing to a wide range of folks.

My opinion: Banjos built by an avid player can be really awesome. There are examples of players who build great instruments like: Dan Knowles, Bob flesher, Lo Gordon...and more I'm sure.

However, sometimes player-built banjos can be made to the specific preferences of the builder. I've owned and played some player-built banjos that did not suit me at all (no need to name them here). Might be the set-up or neck profile or some other feature designed to a specific style or preference very different than my own. I've had one or two where I felt like I had to fight the neck to play them. Just not my cup of tea.

I used to be a good guitar player. I picked up my uncle's old banjo in high school. My neighbor Lynn Shaw gave me a lesson, he lived down the road. I did learn a couple dozen tunes on the banjo and practiced to become a passable frailer. However, when I left Elderly Instruments in 1985 I went to work alone in my own shop. I no longer have the stream of great musicins stopping by the shop like I did at Elderly. They would teach me a new lick if I loaned them my nail clippers. Now my fingers are stiff and sore from tools and motorcycles.

Hey, Bart. Thanks for your reply! I'd love to hear you play one of your banjos. :)
