tubaphone

From dangerousdan on 4/21/2011 9:36:28 AM

I'm looking to bid on a Bart Reiter tubaphone on ebay.  Is it the tone-ring that makes it a tubaphone?  How do these compare with whyte lady?

Tubaphone does indeed refer to the tone ring.

Both the tubaphone and whyle laydie (aka electric) tone rings were original Vega or faribanks/Vega designs from the early 1900s. Tubaphone rings are known for a little more ringing sustain than the whyte laydie.

From Bart, I think the tubaphone banjos are a little less common. He has probably produced more with the whyte laydie ring.

Good luck with the auction. If you win, I bet you'll be very pleased with the banjo.

Thanks. That is helpful.

I can try for a Bart Reiter tubophone (figure it will go between 1000-1100), or a Deering Vega Senator (figure it will also go around 1000-1100), or a Recording King NE Plus for 700. All 3 banjos would be just fine for me as I am just starting out with frailing. I have other banjos for bluegrass. I want a dedicated banjo for frailing. Any ideas out there as to which banjo I should go after? I know its a "personal" thing...and probably a dumb question. But any information or opinion is welcome. Thanks.

Those are very different banjos. The Reiter would be my choice...no doubt.

The Deering will be a well-made banjo with a simple brass hoop tone ring.

The RK is a Chinese import with a whyte laydie ring. I have not been impressed with the RK open-backs I've played. I think there are many better options available (IMHO).
