Neck Action

From jblovel on 6/21/2012 11:59:35 AM

I have had a banjola now for about two months and love this instrument.  However, I feel the action is too high on my Gold Tone.  I have never changed strings on it, so I do not know if the bridge is glued onto the face of the instrument or is just held on by the strings.  If it is held on by the strings, I'm sure I could reduce the heigth of the bridge.  Of course, the other option would be to adjust the truss rod.  The neck looks straight and does not bow up or back, so there may be some adjustment there.  Has anyone here had to adjust the action on their banjola and what would be your recommendation?

Go ahead and change the strings; you might be surprised at what you find.
I bought my banjola off of a lady who played in a bluegrass band. The action was really high. But, lo and behold, when I changed strings not only is the bridge NOT glued to the body but she had slipped a couple of Popsicle-stick type shims under it.

The truss rod is pretty easy to adjust also. I replaced the strings on my GoldTone and had to adjust a bit due to the change in guage from what GoldTone puts in.
