Ok so here's what I'm working on... How bout you???

From pickinchik on 5/18/2011 7:20:00 AM

Finally convinced the hubby to try a duet with me.  We are working on Swept Away by the Avett Bros.  I just have to get a microphone.  I don't have to but I want one so I can mix some stuff in here and there to spice it up.

Any suggestions on a chepo one???  Under $50

I've worked out the banjo portion and he's working on the guitar part.  I want to add a few things to spice it up some once we get going.  I never realized how fun this could really be!!  I just gotta convince him not to be camera shy now.  Hahaha.

O and anyone with advice on how I can sing and harmonize with another person would be greatly appreciated.  I seem to want to follow his voice once he starts singing.  Is this right or should I be my own voice?  If that made sense at all.

Anyway, now everybody let me know us know what you are working on please??

I expect to see/hear it when you get it too.   Haha.

:-)

I'm working on 3 songs that I intend to try to capture at a live performance in a few weeks. I like recording stuff at live performances because it prevents me from doing multiple takes trying to get it perfect. Live, you just get one chance, so it's gotta be good enough the first time.

If you're not used to harmony it can be a bit daunting. Work out your part beforehand. When you sing together you need to be able to concentrate on your part while keeping time with his. If you follow his part too closely, that's what you'll be doing - following his part.

Make sure you don't back off. You need to sing forcefully. That way, you'll be pushing enough air to stay in tune and hear yourself.

I conducted school choirs and it can be difficult to sing harmony. It takes work! But singing harmony is one of my favourite things. It adds so much to the song.

I noticed Tim uses a Zoom H3 for his recording. It is not a mic, but a really good digital recorder that lets you easily transfer the recording to a computer for editing. I have one and record my lessons and jams, then go back and edit out specific tunes to practice with. It's about the size of an electric razor so you can take it to the park, or where ever you want really easily.

Thanks Paul!

rgoad - hmmm. Not sure if that will work for me or not. Is it espensive?

They were about $90 a couple of years ago so and should be much less as they have the H4 now. You can also look for a used one.

You can also just use your video camera as a mic. You can use Audacity (free) for editing. I did a multitrack recording before using video camera and audacity. BTW, I have an H4n, not a H3. I had an H2 for years, but it finally broke.

Tim - my only camera is little digital and the mic is not so great. After looking around I decided on a Blue Snowball usb mic. Hubby got it for me as a gift :-)

So, I've performed, recorded, processed and posted the 3 songs I spoke of above. See 'em linked on this page!

Yeah Marc - You are an overachiever for sure!! Great stuff. :-)

I've put up Swept Away and some stuff I recorded on my new usb mic.

Currently I'm working on Whiskey in the Jar and for my fun side (not that the other stuff isn't fun) I'm working on some Adele stuff.

I really love taking on some of the current music (though Adele is def. not banjo or old time or even close). The standards are great and fun to learn, but I really can relate to all the current music out there much more. Plus I'm not ever wanting to lock myself into one style or one genre of music anyway.
