Hello All. My name is Leslie. I was named after my great-Grandfather. A lot of nice ladies with the same name now, but that's fine.
I have a deep passion for 6 string banjos. I started playing one, almost a year ago. Perhaps I am in the minority here, b/c I tune it more as a banjo than a guitar, some call it 5+1. I added a high G to a 5 string banjo, as the 1st string. I have to use an 8ga string to get it that high. But it worked out very well.
I have a few vintage guitar banjos, and a few that I converted to 6 string. I have a Weymann style 3, which is having a 6 string neck added, it should be ready in a week or 2. It had a hard life before I got it, so I felt it was fine to go ahead and use it for this. The pot is structurally sound, and it's just a GoldTone GT500 neck, nothing super fancy, but it will look decent, and be a solid banjo as well. I would really like to get a Weymann 540. I don't know if that will ever happen or not, they are pretty scarce.
For a while, I played the 6 string in 3 finger Scruggs style. That 6th string really helped put it all together, and that worked out great. Then, in Sept, I started learning to play clawhammer style, using the same tuning. I'm having a great time and enjoying the banjo like never before. This has actually become my life's passion. For me, a good day is when I can practice and play for about 8 hours. I don't get many of them, but that's what I like to do.
