Hi all. I recieved a Bacon and Day tenor from my mother inlaw. She is very kind. It was her fathers About two years ago. I did some research, and was told it was made in 1928. It was mostly stock, except where the strings attach, and it had an added wood bell. WHen I first got it, I couldnt figure out how to play it, so i put it away. Over the last two years, I started to play my mandolin and baritone guitar more often. I looked into tenor guitars, and discovered that they are tuned like mandolins, sought of, and so are tenor banjos! Well, this was surprising, so I picked it up, and what do you know, I can play it! Well, some what. So, before I start playing it dailey, I was looking into some maintainence. I want to remove the ring, and polish it up with a polisher, but I am concerned i will break the original goat head skin on it. I also want to clean up the mahogany fret board. It has some gunk by the frets, but is in overall good condition, no flaking. So, what do i use on the fret board to clean, and I guess oil? And, what polish on the ring and the retainers that hold the ring on? I am guessing I should replace the goat skin head. Any reccomendations? I am not looking at restoring and selling, just cleaning and playing.

Also, where can I re-research the model type, and dates of production, as I lost the original website i found this at. For what its worth, Its not very elaborete, like some of these are, its simple, with dot inlays, and bacon on the head stock.

As a B&D it deserves respect. Clean with an old cotton t-shirt. rub. rub.rub. No oil. No change head, yet. If playing "mando tuning/Tenor" ; fine. More info later.
freddyfingers says: 4/23/2013 5:51:46 AM Thanks! I tune it cgda, I just used my mandolin chords for starters. I have found some websites that show better chording. I figured out how to play a old bluesy rag time sone that i made up on the guitar, on the banjo. It sounds great! I wanted to get some of the 80 year old gunk off the fret board, thats close to the frets. I tried the cloth, but it dont come off. Someone suggested a razor blade and scrape, then lemon oil. Are you thinking this is not a safe bet?

freddyfingers says: 5/21/2013 3:46:02 PM Thanks Gordy! It has opened a new world for me, musically. Within this short time, i have also picked up a tenor guitar, two actually, and the scale is making me look into a octave mandolin. I play them all daily!
