SS Stewart Monogram banjo #11951 Nice original condition. $600
Perhaps made by George Bauer when he continued making banjos marked "S.S.Stewart" 1901-10? "GB" on top of backside of peghead.
27" scale length with an 11" rim. 22 frets on a beautiful rosewood fingerboard. very little fret wear. Set up with light Nylgut Classic strings, newly fitted violin tuners that work smoothly and don't slip. Bone nut.
All original hardware in nice shiny condition. Including the original Stewart tailpiece although missing the ivory rosette. Calfskin head seems to be original so I left that on. It is firm with very little staining. Tried an 11" high crown Remo Renaissance head that fits nicely but decided to stick with the calfskin. Tightened the calfskin to 89-90 on Drum dial - sounds solid. Rim is solid and not boated up.
The neck is solid without any cracks. Some relief near the nut starting around the 3-4th fret - not much. I reset the original neck angle to 2.2% to compensate for the relief and brought the strings down to a manageable action with a 1/2" bridge.
Strings are about 3/16" above the octave fret.
