I originally build this banjo for myself from parts that I had around the shop, but I was talked out of it in August of 2014. I did take it back in trade some years later and have just not had the heart to sell it again, but I’ve got to cull the herd.

The rim and resonator are both from 1931 banjos but do not have matching serial numbers. The serial number of the rim is 9925-26 and the resonator is 124-38. The neck started life as a PB1 neck.

I assembled the pot assembly using the best all original pre-war hardware that I had. The tone ring that I selected was from my favorite batch of Jerry Sloan no-hole tone ring cast in April 2012, or 4-12 as they are referred to.

I was able to graft a piece of 40 year old hard rock maple that had been in Jimmy Cox’s basement for over 35 years, onto the original PB neck.I use a hot knife to get the original PB fingerboard off and inlayed the whole fingerboard, inlays and all into a closely matching piece of Brazilian rosewood, and reattached it to the new grafted neck. I then refinished the neck up to the volute, leaving the front, back and sides of the peghead original and untouched. I antiqued the neck binding and stained the neck to match the resonator.

I will say of all of my projects that I am most proud of this one. It is definitely a one of a kind players banjo that really delivers the goods.
