According to some sources I found, this very clean Vega Ranger is from 1960 though if anyone has proof otherwise, please let me know. No less, thanks to the addition of planetary tuners and a Five star geared fifth peg, this banjo is better than when it left Boston 60 years ago. It has seen little use since then, as the fret ware on the 26 13/16” scale fingerboard is almost non existent. There’s a few scrapes and scratches on the maple ply resonator and some light rust and tarnish on the nickel plating on the rim, but overall this is an excellent example of Vegas most basic five string banjo at the time. There is a brass hoop that functions as the tone ring in the 10 15/16” rim. This one has one single coordinator rod, which seems to be atypical on the Ranger model. Sound wise, it excels at the bright “clawhammer on a resonator banjo” sonic aesthetic, though it has been fun to play bluegrass on too. Also, this banjo is lightweight. My scale is out of commission at the moment but it weighs significantly less than my Fender Telecaster or my Bowtie Gibson RB-250. Additionally, it will include a brown seventies hard shell case commonly found with the eras Japanese banjos.
I like this banjo a lot and won’t mind if it hangs out for a while, but if anyone reading this likes it better than $575, I’d love for someone else to have fun with it too. Thanks for looking and feel free to reach out with any questions.
