A cherry and maple block rim I built. Since it us my first block rim, it has some flaws. However, it is structurally stable.
It is about 1/32" shy of 11" diameter. It is 3/4" thick and 3" tall. It was cut for a 1 piece flange, but I cut the cut too high, so the flange doesnt sit in the right spot. The coordinator rods were drilled in the wrong spots too, but I have plugged those holes. There are also three resonator bracket screws broken off and stuck in the rim. I filed them flat the best I could. This rim has a 1/4" lip around the outer edge that makes this thing a woodie rim. The whole rim is finished with 5 coats of Tru Oil. It was my first rim, as well as my first attempt at a woodie.
I had this thing in a banjo for a few days. Unfortunately, the neck I had paired it with didn't hold up. When I found out the flange cut was wrong, I decided to build a whole new rim. When I played it though, it had a dark tone, but it had tons of crack too. Great note separation.
I'm trying to make a few bucks. I know this rim is not all that great, but it might make a good project. I had plans on adding a strip to put the flange where it belongs and drill new coordinator rod holes, but I would rather have some money to spend on new projects than spending my time trying to repair an old project.
One could easily correct the flange cut if you wanted to still use a one piece flange. However, due to the screws that are stuck it in, it may be very difficult to use a flange with an inside diameter less than 10.75". They could also completely fill the flange cut and make this rim used for an open back, or even add a lip and make it for a two piece flange. Also, the woodie could be cut off the top and a tone ring fitted. This rim could be used in a lot of different ways.
