I've just been informed by someone who knows these bow-ties better than I do that this is likely a 1966.
This banjo is from the batch that I am selling for a friend who developed a medical condition and is liquidating his collection. This one threw me for awhile so I took it completely apart and went through everything, which included talking with some folks that are a tad more knowledgeable than I on these post-war 250s. Here is what I believe.
Because this is one of the last of the flyswatter peghead bow-tie banjos, it looks like Gibson just used whatever parts they had available at the time. As a result, the tension hoop, armrest, and tailpiece are all chrome. All of the other hardware is nickel. A couple of folks have seen the same thing in the latter bow-ties. There is no doubt in my mind that this is the way that it came from Gibson. It does have the thin rim that you would expect in a 1969, but the tone ring is particularly heavy, weighing 3lbs 6oz. I did a good cleaning and set-up as I put it back together and WOW! the sound is incredible. I have never heard another bow-tie flathead sound like this banjo. It is very powerful, with great tone. I would like to own this banjo myself but am pretty tapped out right now on banjo expenditures. This banjo plays very well also and come with a Guardian style HSC. No one would be disappointed in this banjo...Bill
