With the SpikeTyke drill jig, precision in drilling holes for 5th string spikes is no longer left to chance. You get a perpendicular hole, the correct position with respect to the string, with a distance of 9 mm or just under 3/8" from the next fret up.
- The v.2024 jig is for both INWARD and OUTWARD spikes as well as for both RIGHT- and LEFT-handed banjos, starting at $50.
- The "old stock" jig is for both RIGHT- and LEFT-handed banjos, but only for INWARD spikes, starting at $39.
For both the new and the old version, the standard SpikeTyke kit contains the jig, 8 spikes, 2 drill bits, a 0.3 mm feeler gauge, and instructions. The jig can also be used to drill 0.85 mm holes for 0.9 mm spikes. Extended kits containing 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, or 20 spikes are available now.
SPIKES: 2 to 20 spikes are now available in pairs. You can buy these Micro Engineering medium size railroad spikes in bags of 800 for about 2 ¢ a piece at several internet shops, but while Deering, Banjo Ben and others sell them out of the bag at a 2000 % price increase, mine—while coming at a comparable price—are trimmed to about 6 mm to prevent perforation of the neck, and, more importantly, I flatten their heads to about 0.35 mm (0.015") so they don't interfere with fretting the string. The spikes are blacked. Of course, all of that involves some manual work. See photo of Micro Engineering spike before / after.
