I recently got this banjo back in. It was originally finished in 2014 and is one of the best sounding instruments that has gone out of here. Some of you might have heard the banjo that I did in about the same time frame for Herman McGee of White Mountain Bluegrass fame. I call this banjo my Herman McGee special because it is exactly like Herman's with one exception. This banjo has a repurposed original mid-1950s RB100 neck. I have alway thought that the old mahogany from those old 100 necks added to the tonal quality of these old banjos. I did most of these old necks for my own banjos and in fact am playing on one now.
This is a 1957 RB100 pot assembly with original 3 ply rim and matching resonator that has been reskinned and recut to pre-war specs and finished as 1930s style 3 resonator. the flange and tension hoop are original and in great shape. The tailpiece, armrests and hooks/nuts are reproduction and a second coordinator rod has been added. It has a no-hole Dannick tone ring that is very powerful and balanced. The fingerboard is of the highest quality Brazilian rosewood and all wood parts and binding have been sprayed with an antique tint coat followed by multiple coats of nitrocellulose lacquer. The instrument includes a Guardian style hardshell case.
This is a truly professional instrument that I would appraise at $5000-5500. I don't think you would find anything under that, that would come close in sound, playability and finish...Bill
