Setup with a renessance head and Nechville enterprise bridge. This seems to be the perfect setup for these old Kalamazoos for all styles as it tends to take the natural shrillness out of the old maple rims.

This banjo is very at home in all old-time styles be it two-finger, frailing, drop thumb, or old-time three finger. Greats like Doc Watson and Benton Flippen saved their nickels and dimes as kids and bought their Kalamazoo banjos when they were young and never parted ways with them so that tells you something.
The sound is pure and unrefined, it’s got that “old record” quality. Of course, setup can change a banjo a great deal. This little banjo is loud and proud and the Intonation is great. The neck is not overly skinny like the other Kalamazoos that I've owned and is more substantial which I find to be very comfortable.
The overall condition is very good with very few exceptions. The neck has a slight forward bow (I’ve owned about ten of these banjos now and I’ve only owned one that didn’t’ have a forward bow to the neck). This one, like most I’ve seen, has a single bound fatback resonator. The rim is also common to the Kalamazoos and is 5/8 inch.
The frets are in tip top shape with virtually no wear whatsoever. The tuners are the original friction variety and they hold up fairly well. My experience with friction tuners is that once you get them where you are going they tend to hold quite well. The banjo has a few non-original hooks and nuts and the inside wall of the resonator has a hole drilled where it looks like somebody tried to change the location of the resonator lug—why I don’t know. At any rate, it is on the inside of the banjo so you can’t really see it.
