VINTAGE GOLD CROWN SUPER 11 inch HIGH CROWN HEAD

“there is nothing like the sound of a freshly mounted thin calfskin head”—Earl Scruggs.
Whereas I can’t help you with the “freshly mounted” part as this one is probably from the 50s or 60s it is quite thin and should provide what Mr. Scruggs was referring to above. It was a very high quality head in it's day.

Be careful in mounting this one given it’s age—just take it slowly and all will be well. If you try to take it up too tightly too quickly it will probably tear on you. Also, please note that is it does have quite a high crown.

Since arch tops tend to like a high crown, why not give this one a try on your pre-war? This price is right….

PRE WAR WAVERLY BANJO TAILPIECE

The right tailpiece makes a BIG difference in tone. This one is ready for your pre-war conversion, all it needs is to be punched for the fifth string. I’ve always preferred these types of tailpieces as opposed to the Presto-style. First, this one is fully adjustable. Second, this one has a slightly shorter length than a Presto which allows for a bigger, barkier tone. I took the original Presto off of my dad’s pre-war and put on a Paramount because of this reason BTW.

11 INCH HIGH CROWN HIDE HEAD WALNUT STAIN AND MOUNTED ON A SQUARE FLESH HOOP.

I bought this head at Appalachian Bluegrass about a year and a half ago. In order to make this hide head as reliable as possible I scoured it and gave it a “wax treatment”, after which I also sprayed it with a leather sealer to keep moisture out. This head is on the thicker side so it will provide a darker tone and would be great to cut out some of the brashness in a banjo if you wanted to.

This head provides a great old-time sound and look. Please see the video of this head mounted on my dad’s 1932 style 3 conversion.
