Gibson TB-3 tenor banjo and case. Listed in Joe Spann's book as having been built in 1927. The archtop tone ring is the no hole type which preceded the 40 hole archtop tone rings.
Serial numbers match on the neck heel, rim and resonator. The resonator and neck show the typical amount of wear seen on instruments that have been actively played. The plating is nice except for
wear on the armrest and one area of the tension hoop. The frets are in remarkable condition and the fretboard shows very little of the wear normally seen in banjos of this age.
The tuning machines are the pancake type and have all the bushings and fittings. There is a small washer under the armrest bolt to stabilize the armrest.
Original skin head has been replaced with a frosted Weatherking.
I had a five string neck on this TB-3 for several years and it performed quite well. Very nice tone and plenty of volume.
* On June 19, 2015, a TB-3, 1927 no hole archtop sold on eBay for $3,040, plus $50 shipping. 47 bids were placed by 20 people over a ten day period. The banjo did not have the original
Presto tailpiece or the original case and had the two tab, screw into the peghead tuners. My TB-3, shown above, was listed on the Hangout at the same time for $2,950. Yet, someone preferred
to pay $140 more for the one on eBay that is not as nice, in my opinion. This is my final reduction on the Hangout.*
