I acquired this banjo several years ago. Originally it was an archtop TB75. When I got it it had a late 1930s flathead tone ring that weighed 3lb 5oz. I converted a mid 1950s mahogany RB100 neck to a Reno style RB75 neck for it. The banjo is in excellent to near mint condition. It was because of the condition that the fellow who sold it to me originally wanted to buy it back a couple of years ago. He had found an original 5 string mahogany neck and wanted to put it on this banjo. Anyway, I sold it back to him. He put a 5 string tension hoop and a 2lb 15oz pre-war tone ring on it, along with his neck and offered it for sale. Last year I bought the banjo back from him with the lighter tone ring(which I like much better), minus the neck and with the original TB tension hoop. It does have an original 5 string Presto tailpiece and with the exception of that, all of the other hardware is original to this banjo.
It now sports the neck that I converted for it that is profiled to a 1937 original RB neck. The sound is what you would expect from a pre-war flathead Gibson. I also wanted to clarify that this tone ring has been fully authenticated as a full weight pre-war flathead by both Curtis McPeake and Steve Huber and I have that documentation. The banjo that Charlie is playing in the video is this banjo exactly, but with a 5 string tension hoop and an original 5 string neck. The only difference is that it now has the original TB tension hoop and the neck that I made originally for it...Bill
