This banjo was recently on display at the Joe Val festival and received great reviews. It is a no-apology needed straight up bluegrass banjo, with a great sound and play-ability. This banjo is a 1957 RB250 that had an archtop ring originally. When Gibson started making flathead rings again, it was cut and fit for an early post-war Gibson flathead ring.
The neck has had a break along the peghead that has been properly repaired many years ago. There has been some binding replaced, about a 3" piece on the bass side. All work looks very old and appears to be very stable. No new neck is needed. The rim has been used in another pot assemblies at some time in it's life, as evidenced by the holes for the two forward L brackets having been drilled for a different position at one time, and the rim has been fitted with a second coordinator rod.
This banjo sounds as good as any old flathead RB250 that I have ever had in the shop. The resonator is in great shape and the neck is very playable with little fret wear. The rim is nice and round and I have done a complete set-up including re-fit the tone ring to the rim for a "loose slip fit on a humid day". All of the hardware, except the tailpiece and second coord rod is correct for the vintage of the banjo. It comes with a Gibson hard shell case.
This is a player banjo as opposed to a collector quality instrument and your satisfaction is guaranteed...Bill
