This is an opportunity to own a unique piece of Gibson history. This hand signed 1989 Gibson Earl Scruggs Standard belongs to one of my customers and is in better than new condition. Let me explain. Many of you know that the 1988-1993 Gibson (Greg Rich era) banjos were some of the best post-war banjos that Gibson produced. The Richard Kulesh Sr. tone rings that were used were exceptional rings and produced great tone. This one has serial # K969 tone ring. That, and the attention to detail that went in to these banjos makes them very desirable. The only downside was that many of the banjos, especially some of the granadas and the ESS banjos had rather heavy necks that made them a bit uncomfortable to play. The customer who owns this banjo has another of my banjos and a neck that I did for one of his pre-wars, and he wanted this neck to feel the same as his others, so he asked me to reprofile the back of this neck the same as his others. I use my templates that I took from my 1937 original RB1 and reprofiled this neck. I didn't touch the front, back and sides of the peghead and I will say the result came out great. The neck is extremely playable and the stain match is perfect. At the same time I dressed and polished the frets, which were not very worn and I re-fit the neck to the rim, which was another weak area on some of the Gibson re-issue banjos. After a complete set-up, all I can say is that the results speak for themselves. The sound is what you would expect from a well set-up banjo of this era and it comes with the original HSC.
