Here we have a recently finished Vega Style F conversion. Original Vega rim, 10 15/16, original shoes, tension hoop and rolled tonering. It has a new calfskin head, j-hooks, dowel hardware, and few coats of polish.
The newly built neck is Mahogany w/ a figured maple stripe and maple pinstripes. Rosewood fretboard, Vega style headstock overlay and heelcap. Star inlayed on headstock with blank fretboard and side position markers. The neck has a thumb notch for frailing between the 17-22 fret still making the higher frets accessable.
In an effort to get the bridge closer to the center of the head for a 'plunkier' sound. I added about a half inch to the heel end of the neck. This enables you to keep the scale of 26.5 inch scale. Now you could just shorten the scale and get the same result, lots of builders do. But when you shorten the scale I believe it takes some of the power of the banjo away because the strings are "slack-er" in some tunings. By adding this unnoticeable half inch you keep the scale and the sound.
Finished up with a French Polish it came together quite well and has an awesome sound. I will post a sound file asap and link it to the add. Please feel free to email me with any questions you may have.
