This is a new Barry Sholder Gourd 5 string Banjo #049 "Old Plantation".
This banjo was inspired by the turn of the century watercolor painting "The Old Plantation" showing slaves dancing and playing a gourd banjo. I thought the design of the banjo would be fun to build. I did use a bit of artistic license and used some exotic woods. The neck is Curly Maple with a fretless light Black Walnut fingerboard. The peghead is Curly Black Walnut Burl.. Heavily figured!. The tailpiece is a Romero style which keeps the strings from touching the edge of the gourd.
The strings are a custom set of D'Addario nylon and composite classical guitar strings. These feel harder than Nylguts and are very durable. The tuners are friction Rosewood violins.
The gourd measurees 8 3/4" dia x 5 3/4" deep and has a 2 1/2" soundport on the upper side of the gourd for better bass response. As with all my banjos the interior of the gourd has been coated with fiberglass resin to strengthen the gourd and improve acoustics. Goatskin covers the gourd.
The banjo is signed and numbered.
