I told my wife I was cashing in some of my retirement account, which is about true. In this case I am selling my 2001 Deering Deluxe 5 string – pretty standard Deluxe with maple rim, no hole bronze tone ring, mahogany neck and resonator, ebony fretboard and peghead overlay. Resonator is bound top and bottom, and the finish throughout is a high gloss finish. Has spikes at 7, 9, and 10, a Deering frosted head, Snuffy Smith compensated bridge, and a Deering Presto copy tailpiece. Inlays are a nice Deering engraved pearl logo on the peghead and slotted diamonds on the fretboard. This banjo has plenty of lower end and volume and to me (admitted clawhammer player) sounds pretty darned good. Case is a standard arch top Deering case - I think these are really nice cases.
Issues – a couple of scratches into but not through the finish on the resonator (usual buckle issue), and in some places on the edge of the fretboard (not the neck) the finish is lifting. Talked to Deering about the finish on the edge of the fretboard and they thought it was just that it did not adhere adequately – not a bother when playing and not worth messing with the finish on the neck – and other than that very little fret or playing wear. The nickel is lightly tarnished, but I like it that way so to polish is up to you. I just don't taking away that nice patina nickel plating gets after a while. And a small ding on the top of the case.
But really a nice banjo and a great deal for my asking price of $895 plus $50 to ship – or if you are in the D.C. or Baltimore area you could pick it up. Arrrgh, that price is killing me but it is going to make someone happy.
