This is a circa 1920 Orpheum Special number three. It was the top of the Orpheum line and features beautiful inlays of pearl and abalone. The drum has its original finish and the original neck has been refinished. The neck is straight with a slight bow at at 18th fret. This does not affect the playability and it will sound true on every fret all the way up the neck. The dowel stick has been replaced by a coordinator rod. Unfortunate as that is, the neck joint is super solid and the problems with old dowel sticks shifting are gone and you can adjust the action. The tuners are original and have beautiful pearl buttons. Fifth string peg has been replaced with a geared peg. It is 1 pound and 4 ounces lighter than a Whyte Laydie. All these changes are great for people who really want to play the instrument, yet it still has great hang on the wall eye candy appeal. Set up with a renaissance head over the classic Orpheum tone ring, it gives you a crisp clear Charlie Poole sound. There is fingerboard wear in the lower positions, not enough to affect its playability. You can see it in the photos. It's a great example of the inlay work and the marquetry in these beautiful old instruments.
