For sale, an older flat-body mandolin tagged by J.P. Wiesel of Cumberland, MD. He owned a music store there from 1873 until I’m assuming his death in 1926, billed as the “Largest and Oldest Music House in Western Maryland”: findagrave.com/memorial/119007...sel/photo
I imagine this was built by a maker like Regal or Supertone, in which he carried with his own tag.
It has had a few repairs, mainly a top crack repair before I received it, being glued and cleated, and I glued some loose spots in the top seam, reglued an existing top brace and making another, along with gluing a second smaller crack running parallel with the other, but this one is mainly running over top the liner, and making a new ebony bridge for it. I’ve also filled and recut the E strings slots as they were low, and replaced the bottom tailpiece screw along with adding some to the tuner plates. One gear on the tuners had already been replaced. A piece of cork has been added between the strings and tailpiece to eliminate some rattling of the strings against it. There is some expected fret wear, though not noticing much buzzing. I have the action set at 1/16” at the 12th fret. Strings do bottom out a little around this fret and further up the extension, but nothing serious. Scale length is 12 7/8”. Nut width is about 1 1/8”.
