I have built over 20 minstrel banjos but never attempted a gourd banjo until now. However, I have seen many gourd banjos where the gourd broke or cracked where the dowel stick went through the gourd. So I decided to use a sturdy wooden bowl instead of a gourd and paint the bowl to make it less obvious that it was a wooden bowl and not a gourd. The bowl is roughly 12” across the front. The head is a goat skin treated with Scotchguard to make it less susceptible to humidity. The distance from the nut to the top of the flailing scoop is approximately 15”. The overall length of the banjo is roughly 36”. Strung with nylon strings. Tuning pegs were turned by me on a small lathe. The banjo holds tune very well and is fun to play!
