I found this rim attached to a five string tenor neck (doubled first string) that was irreparably destroyed. It was in such rough condition that the gentleman I got it from said he found it at a yard sale in Florida where it was about to be thrown away. Thankfully, 112 years after it first left Boston, this rim has another shot and being a great instrument with the help of your favorite neck builder.
The weirdest thing about this rim is that the dowel stick is not only maple, it doesn’t appear to be made by Vega at all. The neck remnants that came on it were mahogany and possibly made by Vega, so who knows what was going on here. Regardless, the dowel stick seems well made so I figured a future owner would like to have it.
The rim itself is in pretty decent condition for its age. Plating is worn off in spots and theres plenty of patina, but it has plenty more banjoing left in it.
The head is skin and while it’s very old, I don’t believe it’s original.
Thanks for looking and please reach out with any questions.
