1929 Gibson Granada 40-hole archtop conversion to 5-string. This tenor banjo is from production batch 9356, which was very close to being regarded as "ground zero" for the tension hoops falling into pieces, according to a highly regarded expert. The broken tension hoop has been replaced as is evident in the photos. All other aspects of the original tenor pot are in excellent condition.
The five string neck, which is mahogany, is as good as I have ever seen, even in terms of the care given to fitting the neck heel to the tenor rim. The notch in the rim was not enlarged to accept the neck heel. The neck does not have a maker's mark, but it strongly reminds me of two well known Kentucky builders. The peghead tuners are the original pearl button tuners from the tenor neck. The fifth string tuner is a gold plated Kroll. The lacquer finish on the neck is almost blemish free.
I have left the Weather King head a bit under 90 on the drum dial, so the buyer has room to tighten, if desired.
The tenor case is in fair condition and the tenor neck has been played with enthusiasm. The 5-string case is a flat top hard shell in very good condition.
I am willing to drive two hours to meet a buyer so that shipping can be avoided. I have 50+ years experience packing and shipping if necessary. If you have questions about the Granada, please contact me.
