This is something of an oddball’s oddball, which I find quite endearing personally. I have always found Vega instruments from after the 1930s mysterious, enigmatic, and criminally underrated, so I have a lot to like and to learn from here.
This banjo has serial number that should date to 1963. However, the peghead style dates to the Martin era of Vega history. In the case, there is correspondence from the Martin repair department to Schaefer Music in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan facilitating the return of an unspecified repair. My current hypothesis to the pedigree of this banjo is that it was sent to Martin for a new neck in the mid 70s, but that could be wrong.
No less, this banjo has a 10-15/16” rim with a Tubaphone tonering. The maple resonator has a wall wrapped in pyrolin. The neck appears to be straight grain maple with an ebony fretboard and peghead overlay.
The peghead is outfitted with Grover guitar tuners and cam tuners that work great. The tailpiece is a Waverly style that is embossed with the word “Vega”.
The instrument is in exceptionally good shape and appears to have been barely played.
Ships in a presumably original Lifton case with a bunch of Vega price lists from 1970, which make this even more confusing.
Kindly reach out with any questions or thoughts about the pedigree of this instrument.
