Prewar Gibson Granada PB 5-String Conversion from 1927 with the Serial 8831-11, twopiece Flange and 40-hole Archtop Tonering. It was pruchased from Curtis McPeake and brought to Germany in 1995.
The Pot is original with the decal and serial stamp inside the rim, fon at the resonator, archtop tonering, E2 tension hoop, Granada clampshell tailpiece and armrest. There are four replacement hooks. The rim is in really good shape. The metal hardware has a lot of patina and most of the gold plating is gone, but there is some left, especially on the tonering and less exposed spots of the pot. Someone at sometime put glas stones in the resonator. They come with the Banjo as part of its history but I took them off because the old maple wood grain is too beautiful to be sparkled by this kind of juwelry.
Who built the conversion neck remains unknown, but it is a nice shaped curly maple neck with doublecut peghead, ebony fingerboard, Gibson Bella Voce inlays and newer golden tuning pegs. It is approximately from the 70s/80s and shows some wear. The truss rod works well and is set up with a bit of relief now.
The Banjo was carefully cleaned and set up with a new Remo head, a Dotson 11/16 bridge and GHS light strings. The head is on a DrumDial tension between 87-88 and tuned to a "b" note with a high ringing "#g" to offer a nice balanced sound. If a higher and sharper Archtop sound is wanted it can easily be tuned up more. The instrument comes in a Gibson tagged Canadian made hardcase.
