Late 1920s-1930 Slingerland 'May Bell' 4-string, 19-fret Tenor banjo (10 3/4" rim). This banjo is in excellent condition - a true 'Closet Queen.' Zero fret wear or fingerboard wear.
I installed a new head and added a new Presto-style tailpiece. Everything else is in complete original condition. Has a solid tone 'hoop' for a great 'bark' in the tone with the original Grover two-foot bridge and the head tension set at 90.
I have light gauge steel strings on it now but these banjos sound great with nylon strings too. The friction tuners work fine, but they have their obvious limits compared to modern geared tuners. I currently have it tuned C-F-A-C which is just one note lower than the four strings of a five-string banjo, but it holds tune fine in D-G-B-D too. I haven't tried other tunings.
Includes the original purple-lined case which is not fully functional, unfortunately. It's fine for shipping and for home storage, but the area around the handle is structurally collapsed so the locks don't hold tightly enough for safe travel.
The metal work on this May Bell is all great and the resonator is solid and straight (not cracked or collapsed from people cranking down the retaining screw too far).
