The Deering Sierra openback (2023) is a uniquely versatile "clawgrass" banjo that will hold its own in any old-time session or bluegrass jam. This is owing to the fact that the tone chamber (pot) is built using a rim made of violin grade maple combined with the highly regarded Deering 06 - 20 hole bell bronze flathead tone ring.
This classic "flathead" is the same ring that is used in the Deering Clawgrass Banjo line and it produces a sparkling and powerful sound! Eliminating the heavy flange and resonator also gives the banjo a lighter weight that goes easier on the back.
The banjo was ordered directly from the Deering shop and was later professionally setup by expert banjo luthier Richie Dotson. He installed a fifth string pip (nut) and spikes at the 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th frets. He also chose a Dotson "old wood" walnut bridge to bring out the fullest tone possible. This banjo includes a Deering hardshell case.
