These elusive and somewhat mysterious pyramid tone ring equipped banjos have gotten a lot of positive attention in recent years for their light weight and big sound. This banjo plays and sounds great in its present tenor configuration, but would make an excellent five string conversion with some help from your favorite neck maker.
Unfortunately, this one lost its original tuners, tailpiece, armrest, L- Brackets, thumbscrews, and resonator along the last 98 years, but that does mean it’s the cheapest original 1920s Pryramid tone ring banjo on the market right now by a substantial amount.
This banjo has a worn but quite functional maple neck outfitted with a rosewood fingerboard adorned with “Nick Lucas” style inlays. Plenty of evidence of heavy use of this instrument, though surprisingly there isn’t that much fret wear.
The rim is fashioned with a shoe and plate flange. The core of the rim assembly appears all original though a renaissance head was installed by the store I acquired it from and I’ve opted to leave that be.
The instrument can be shipped assembled without a case, assembled in a 1970s Japanese hard shell case, or with the neck removed without a case in a smaller box. This final option should make shipping fairly inexpensive.
