This is an exceptionally nice example of a one of the more underrated banjo shaped offerings Gibson made in the past thirty or so years. The RB features elegant and understated aesthetics and a brass hoop instead of a mastertone tone ring. These sound great while being gentler on your back and wallet.
The neck, resonator, and rim are maple. The fretboard is ebony with a 1-1/4” width. There is minimal fret wear and the hardware has held up nicely over the past twenty two years with only minor signs of use. Tuners are five star. All components appear original except the Purcell bridge I put on it.
This banjo not only looks stately, it sounds really good too. The best hoop banjos I’ve encountered have this sound I call “unapologetically banjo” that has this raw bite and brightness that avoids being abrasive. This banjo exemplifies that. This would be a banjo I would keep if I didn’t already own an outstanding 1957 RB-150 as my light weight five string.
Comes with the paperwork, which identifies this as having been made in 2002. People have told me these didn’t catch on at the time, which makes sense as the sale in the paperwork was three years later in 2005.
Unfortunately I did not get this one with the branded Gibson case, but it does come in a very clean flat top TKL case.
