I just came by a very nice Rettberg & Lange made unlabeled 12” double spun rim banjo with a 28.5” scale length.
The neck is dimensionally identical to the SS Stewart Thoroughbred banjo. This banjo was made at a time when Fred Stewart was working for Jos. Sterns and developed a line of Private Label banjos “4S”. The 4S banjos were most likely produced solely by R&L.
This meant that theoretically R&L was tooled up to make SSS style off brand banjos, banjos, so it appears that they did!
The banjo is from the 1902-1915 timeframe, but could possibly be a little later.
The neck is perfectly straight, all original hardware except the no-knot tailpiece, and plays beautifully with a 1/2” bridge from standard tuning all the way down to minstrel tuning. The head also seems to be original to the banjo, and holds tension adequately. The width at the nut is just under 1 1/4”.
The strings are a custom gauge of Savarez Alliance fluorocarbon strings.
