Here is a rare opportunity at an orphan rim from one the most beloved banjos to come out of Groton, Connecticut. This 11” internal resonator equipped rim appears to be made of a mix of dyed maple and mahogany. The calf skin head is likely not original though I could be wrong. It just looks too nice to be as old as the rest of the rim. The rim’s serial number, “5252”, would be from around 1920 or slightly later according to my research. Please fill me in if I’m wrong on any of this.
Issues include slight crunches that go against the wood grain around some of the holes on the rear or the rim. There also appears to be a tight crack on the upper treble side of the rim. I can’t get this crack to move when pressing on it.
Dowel stick and all neck attachment hardware is included.
I acquired this rim attached to a homemade long neck (two extra frets) that has the frets installed crookedly. Given that I like to play along to old episodes of Pete Seegar’s Rainbow Quest in tune, I opened to remove that neck. That being said, it sounded quite good in that configuration. Also, if a homemade Bacon style long neck with crooked frets sounds like something you’d want in your life, send me a message.
Thanks for looking and feel free to reach out with any questions.
