Any thoughts on solo bluegrass banjo playing?

Posted by DandyRandy on Wednesday, December 3, 2008

There is something lacking, mainly other instruments, but I enjoy playing scruggs style tunes solo. Does anyone have any tips or experiences doing the same at open mics or live performances?

I have done that a couple of times,  but really prefer a backup with at least guitar or fiddle.  A friend once played his fiddle with my banjo, it came out really nice.
When it's just me and my 'jo,  I try to keep it to simple bluegrass tunes (long journey home,  or a gospel tune).   I vamp while singing,  or do a tune I wrote.  The simpler,  the better.

Also,  look at some John Hartford videos on YouTube.
