I have done that a couple of times, but really prefer a backup with at least guitar or fiddle. A friend once played his fiddle with my banjo, it came out really nice.
When it's just me and my 'jo, I try to keep it to simple bluegrass tunes (long journey home, or a gospel tune). I vamp while singing, or do a tune I wrote. The simpler, the better.
