Posted by bevans on Sunday, November 30, 2008

Hello to all of my friends here at Banjo Hangout and best wishes for the holiday season.

The big news is that my new CD with Megan Lynch, titled "let's do something..." will be available beginning around December 10th. We'll have the project with us for California tour dates and workshops in Berkeley and in southern California from December 10 to 14 and the CD will be available at the Native and Fine Music webstore (www.nativeandfinerecords.com) beginning around December 16th. You can hear samples now by visiting the BEML (Bill Evans & Megan Lynch) MySpace page at www.myspace.com/billevansandmeganlynch.

I hope to catch up with some of my California Hangout friends this month. Here are the concert & workshop details:

Bill's banjo workshop topic is "Play Great Backup Now." This will be a "hands on, bring your banjo and let's play" kind of a session with practical and easy to understand tips that you can immediately use in your next jam session or band rehearsal. Topics to be covered include vamping, up- and down-the-neck back up, Scruggs' great back up licks, using the capo, and playing in different keys. This workshop is open to all levels of students but is ideal for those who have one or more years of playing experience. Bill's group teaching method keeps everyone involved. Tab examples are provided but it is not necessary to read tab to get a lot out of this session. Audio and/or video recording is encouraged. For more info and to make a reservation, phone 818-282-9001.

The Intro to Jamming Workshop with Megan Lynch is designed for those who are yearning to play with others but are having trouble getting started. Megan and Bill will take you from the very basic steps of understanding how a bluegrass jam session works to feeling more confident playing with others. In the process, you'll learn about jam etiquette, how to "hear" chord progressions, when and how to use the capo and figuring out what to play that will sound best with others. This is a "hands on, bring your instrument and let's pick" style workshop. Additional info at http://www.pickinparlor.com/Lesson%20Program.htm

December 14: Altadena, CA: Bill Evans and Megan Lynch return to the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N. Lake. Showtime 8 p.m. Advance reservations recommended by phoning 626-398-7917. Additional info at http://www.coffeegallery.com/home.html

All the best,

Bill Evans

Thanks! Your comment reminded me that I needed to change the dates for River City on my homepage Schedule. We're actually kicking off the festival on the Main Stage on Friday, January 9th at 5 p.m. We'll be hosting separate fiddle and banjo workshops on Saturday morning and then hosting an Intro to Jamming workshop on Saturday afternoon. We'll end our day with a set on the regional stage at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday. This should be a lot of fun - there are a lot of great banjo players there this year - from J. D. Crowe and Tony Trischka to Ron Stewart, Jens Kruger and Bill Keith. All the best, Bill
