Sort of! I went into Gryphon Strings and found their cheapest banjo, a Deering Goodtime, and plunked around on that a bit. Picked out tunes, tried to harmonize with a class playing in a practice room, tried something like "rolls", trying to keep my ring finger fixed on the head, etc.
It's not too big for my hands, and it looks like something I can learn.
It also looks like I'm on my own as far as getting one, I can plunk around a bit at music stores I guess, and just keep working on saving up that money. Fortunately I had a decent day panhandling, and am able to put $20 into the "banjo fund".
