Hard work today

Posted by PaulKirby on Monday, November 3, 2008

A friend of mine called last wednesday to let me know that her completely healthy baby was stillborn. Ugh. I asked if I could do anything at all to help her, and she asked me if I would please sing Schubert Ave Maria at the funeral. I said yes, of course I would.

I just got back from the funeral and 3 hours of driving. I'm exhausted.  I feel so blessed that I was called upon to help, and I think I understand what the proverb that says 'It's better to go into the house of mourning than the house of rejoicing'. Being able to help, by singing in the churchand the reading at the graveside while they lowered that tiny white coffin into the frozen ground, and then sitting with the family afterwards during lunch, makes me see that all we really have in this life is each other. Helping to shoulder some of the burden of grief is tiring to be sure, but I feel as if I have done my Master's work today.

Paul, sorry to hear about your friends baby, but it is good to know that there are good people in the world like you.

Hi Paul...you are right to say you feel blessed to be called upon to help...you were blessed while at the same time you are a blessing...this is the real work of this life.  Thanks for sharing your experience...it is heartwarming and bittersweet.  I echo "vortex's" reponse to you as well.  Well done Paul!

Wow, Paul.  That's tough.  You're not only a good friend to the family, you're a good servant... willing to share your gifts on any occasion.

This is touching.  It makes me feel good that there are folks like you in the world.

The loss of a child is heartbreaking.  I am glad that you were there to support and sing for the family and baby.
