dixie breakdown

Posted by robin jones on Thursday, October 23, 2008

My first Reno tune is coming along. Actually, I'm not sticking especially close to the Reno script. The B part, which is the hard part for me, is pretty close to Don's playing on the disk I have. After working extensively on "B" I've almost got it but now the simple other parts are less than clean. Go figure.

I'm thinking about posting tunes, more or less, in just one or two takes from here on out. They'll be sloppy, but much more representative than the five, 10, or even more takes I've done up until now. I mean, if I practice something into the ground, then record it into the ground, I can usually make it sound halfway decent, but I'm starting to think that's cheating. It would be different if I was playing a paying gig or something. But some of y'all are my peers and I'd like for everybody, including me, to be able to look back in six months and hopefully see/hear that I've progressed at least a little.

Robin, I will be very interested to hear your Reno tunes. That's an interesting point about posting tunes to keep track of progress. I usually do multiple takes and try to post the best version possible, partly because I am too embaressed to do anything else, but partly I find it just moves me further forward to work on a tune until I am satisfied it is the best I can do...then I forget about it, and it's on to the next challenge!

Your point about moving further forward is well taken. I was writing off a little frustration I think. Anyway, if it's not ready it's not ready. Peace.
