fret job

Posted by Jonnycake White on Thursday, September 25, 2008

Well it's not a banjo, but I did a fret job tonight on a whimsical instrument I'm building.  I call it a nutcase dulcimer because it's a walkabout dulcimer made from a wood box which originally was filled with chocolate covered nuts.  I had a banjo neck that I'd started that I cut too narrow by mistake when I was shaping it.  I cut off the 5th string peg area and reshaped the neck but figured it would only be wide enough for three strings (or at least, three string courses) so a walkabout dulcimer came to mind.  I'm getting nearly finished with it - tonight I hammered in the frets, leveled, crowned, and dressed them.  It's a diatonic scale, of course, so only about 2/3rds the frets of a chromatic fretboard of the same length.

Sounds like a great idea! Post some songs so we can hear what it sounds like. Who know? Perhaps you've started something.
