Hi Dan you are not a million miles from me....good starting place is "Janet Davis Teach yourself Banjo"
Starts you off learning roll patterns and a few simple tunes, it is excellent and I still refer to mine often. it also comes with an excellent cd, shows you how to play each tune...welcome to the hangout Lee

Janet's book is a good one. I also recommend Jack Hatfield's Beginning Bluegrass Method Book #1, followed by #2. Both have CDs and DVDs. Jack has a way of showing you a roll then putting a song into that roll and highlighting the melody notes and then playing the song slow so you can pick along and up to speed so you can hear what it sounds like. www.hatfieldmusic.com.
Of course, there are lots and lots of great beginner books, and these are just 2 that I recommend.

Welcome to the banjo world Dan. I recommend you come to a festival or two and maybe take in Sore Fingers Week in the spring. There are beginner's classes there.
